Want to Donate a Horse?
The Horses at RDA are our most important resource, without horses, we wouldn't be here, and it's only because of the fantastic horses that we have and have had, that we are still going after all these years.
If you're looking to invest into the RDA Alice Springs centre there are a few things that we would like to give you so you can help us continue to have great horses to work with, for all of the staff, volunteers and of course our riders!
First things first, what do we need at the centre? This changes from time to time, depending on our students and horses as different students need different horses (we wouldn't put an 80 kilo man on a pony). Currently we have two ponies and two strong horses and one to meet both criteria in the middle. From that you can see we have most of our bases covered.
Secondly, the breed of the horse is very important. Breed gives a great indicator of likely temperament, attitude and the strength of the horse and its uses.
Thirdly, the horse's history. If a horse has issues with inexperienced riders riding it because of certain events in its past then RDA isn't the place for that horse. All of our riders begin at square one, learning everything from the ground level up and working all the way to trotting. On top of this, here at RDA we teach the English riding style; a horse that has been ridden western all its life will take a long time to get used to English and will set our students back in many ways.
Fourthly, the age, weight and size of the horse. This simply links back into the first point of what we need, while also pointing out that a horse that only has a few years left may not be successful at RDA with training taking anything up to year and sometimes longer!
Finally, if you're looking at donating a horse, or purchasing one for the centre, ALWAYS contact the centre manager before going too far as we may not even be able house another horse at this time.
